Uncle Al's Hushpuppy Mix
Uncle Al's Hushpuppy Mix
Some like them sweet…Uncle Al likes them with some heat! This savory mix is full of flavor with a little bite. We have heard a few stories about the origins of hushpuppies. Did soldiers in the 1800’s fry up corn meal batter to keep their barking dogs “hushed”? Could it be they were used to quiet the growling bellies of hungry Southerners before the main course was served? Regardless of how they got their name, we think you’ll love Uncle Al’s Hushpuppy Mix as a side dish with today’s catch or even on their own.
BOLD SOUTHERN CORNMEAL BLEND
HOW UNCLE AL LIKES THEM…HEAT 2-3 INCHES OF OIL IN A LARGE SKILLET. IN A SMALL BOWL, ADD 1/2 CUP OF BUTTERMILK TO 1 CUP OF HUSHPUPPY MIX AND STIR UNTIL COMBINED. THE BATTER SHOULD BE LUMPY. ADD MORE BUTTERMILK, IF NEEDED, AND FORM INTO 2 INCH BALLS. CAREFULLY ADD TO THE OIL AND ROTATE FOR 5-7 MINUTES OR UNTIL GOLDEN BROWN.
HAVE A DEEP FRYER? PREHEAT OIL AT 350 DEGREES. COOK FOR ABOUT 5-7 MINUTES OR UNTIL THEY START FLOATING AND ARE GOLDEN BROWN.
DON’T HAVE BUTTERMILK? USE WHOLE MILK AND ADD AN EGG TO THE ENTIRE BAG OF MIX.
TOO SPICY? TRY ADDING A LITTLE BIT OF SUGAR TO TAME THE HEAT.
NOT HOT ENOUGH???!!! ADD SOME DICED JALAPENOS TO THE MIX
OUR FAMILY’S FAVORITE VERSION? ADD SWEET CORN FOR A HEARTIER TEXTURE.
